"Divided on D-Day: New Perspectives on the Normandy"

Monday, October 29, 2018 at 6:00 PM at the USS Silversides Museum

Nationally acclaimed author, Edward Gordon, presents on his newest book, "Divided on D-Day: How Conflicts and Rivalries Jeopardized the Allied Victory at Normandy" on Monday, October 29, 2018 at 6:00 PM at the USS Silversides Museum, 1346 Bluff Street, Muskegon, MI.  Sponsored by the USS Silversides Museum and the MCC Center for Experiential Learning.

For the 75th Anniversary of D-Day comes this fresh perspective on the Normandy Invasion and the following three-month campaign. Based on his research for his book, Divided on D-Day, historian Ed Gordon spotlights the conflicting egos, national rivalries, and professional abilities of the principal D-Day commanders. He shows how a lack of cooperation and bad command decisions lengthened the war, increased casualties, and allowed the later Soviet domination of Eastern Europe.
The questions covered by Gordon’s analysis include:

  • What were the principal points of contention in the planning for D-Day?
  • What delayed the Allied breakout from the Normandy beachhead for two months?
  • Why did the bulk of the German army escape from the Falaise Pocket?
  • Who stopped Patton’s advance into Germany in August 1944?
  • Why was the opening of the port of Antwerp delayed so long when the Allies faced a critical logistics crisis?
  • What were the factors that doomed General Montgomery’s Operation MARKET GARDEN?

Ed Gordon analyzes how the top Allied commanders’ poor decisions and misallocation of resources during the last half of 1944 gave Hitler the opportunity to launch the bloody Battle of the Bulge and needlessly prolonged the war in Europe to the spring of 1945.
