Black History Month 2023

We’re excited for Black History Month 2023!

Black History Month events will be at Hackley Library.

These events are made possible through a
general bequest from Bess Commodore.

 

Gospel Kick-Off Event – Monday, January 30 from 6-7pm 

Get ready for a phenomenal musical performance from Holy Trinity Praise Team and Kingdom Embassy Praise Team!  Additionally, we’ll witness a Praise Dance, as well as Vignettes of Black History.

Black History Trivia Contest – Saturday, February 4 from 2-3pm

Gather a group of friends and family (up to 4 people per team), and test your knowledge on Black History, from past history to current times!  Register your team HERE.   Free.
Viewers of the contest do not need to register.

Open Mic Poetry Night – Monday, February 6 from 6-7pm

Embrace an evening of inspiring poetry!  Come to share poetry, or come just to listen. ~  We’re excited to hear your favorite poems, poetry you’ve written, or examples of African American poetry.

Sweet Soul Food Dessert Contest – Saturday, February 11 from 2-3pm

Look through your recipes, find your best soul food dessert, and compete in HPL’s contest!  Winners will be awarded prizes, and bragging rights!  Participants are asked to bring enough for the judges and viewers to taste.  If you wish to register a dish, click HERE to register.  Free.

Attendees just viewing the contest do not need to register.

Youth Services BHM Craft Day – Saturday, February 18 from 2-4pm

Join us in decorating no-sew quilt squares for our Unity Quilt! While you’re here, learn a little about the rich history of textile making in Africa and how those roots manifested in African American quilting traditions. We’ll have a prize drawing on February 28 for those who turn in a quilt square. Free.

Can’t make it to our craft day? We’ll have a limited number of take and make kits available for pick up in Youth Services. Quilt squares must be turned in by Feb 25. Free.

Black Hair Care Clinic – Monday, February 27 from 6-7pm

Have questions about hair care?  Expert Nietra Hood will share tips, tricks, and knowledge on caring for your hair, as well as for a young person’s hair.  Registration is preferred – click HERE to register.  Free.

Youth and Teen Take and Make Quilt Squares – Available through February

Take a quilt square kit home and create your own work of art, but wait, bring it back to the library to become a part of our unity quilt. 
Take and Make kits will be available beginning February 1.  We will be adding to our unity quilt throughout the month of February (final squares needed by February 25) and we will have a drawing on February 28 for 3 quilt square prizes!).
