“PLAYNTINGS: works surfaced,” an exhibit featuring hybrid combinations of painting, drawing and sculptural components by Lily Kuonen, opens on Tuesday, Jan. 16, and runs through March 2 in the Muskegon Community College Overbrook Gallery.

(60 mins.) The documentary explores the massive African American migration from the rural south to the prosperous north during the war years and beyond. Narrator, Cicely Tyson takes the viewer through not only facts, but stories and lives that were challenged and changed during this historic period of time right here in Muskegon, Michigan. Brown Bag Film admission is free and complimentary coffee and cookies are provided. Auditorium doors open at 12:00 pm. Support provided by the Michigan Humanities Council.

Set on Chicago's South Side, this seminal American drama revolves around the divergent dreams and conflicts within three generations of an African-American family, the Youngers: son Walter Lee, his wife Ruth, his sister Beneatha, his son Travis, and matriarch Lena. When her deceased husband's insurance money comes through, Mama Lena dreams of moving to a new home in a better neighborhood. Walter Lee, a chauffeur, has other plans: buying a liquor store and being his own man. Beneatha dreams of medical school. The Younger family's heroic struggles to retain dignity in a harsh and changing world is a searing and timeless document of hope and inspiration.
