Water: Paintings by Sheryl Budnik and Mary Sundstrom

From a placid, introspective pool to a roaring, ship-wrecking beast, water is the subject of paintings by Michigan artists Sheryl Budnik and Mary Sundstrom on exhibit in Muskegon Community College’s Overbrook Gallery from Sept. 25 through Oct. 26, 2017.

The gallery, located on the MCC main campus at 221 S. Quarterline Road, is free and open to the public. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday, with special weekend and evening hours during performances in the adjacent Overbrook Theater. For more information, call the MCC Arts and Humanities Department at (231)777-0324.

A free public reception will be held on Thursday, Oct. 12, from 4-5:30 p.m. in Overbrook Gallery with a gallery talk by the artists at 4:30 p.m.

AHFEST Film Fest Wednesdays in October at Muskegon Museum of Art

On Wednesday evenings throughout October, the 2017 Muskegon Area Arts and Humanities Festival (ahfest) will show and discuss four films associated with WATER, the ahfest’s theme this year, at the Muskegon Museum of Art, 296 W Webster Ave. in downtown Muskegon.

Admission is free and open to the public. Each movie will be followed by a brief discussion. All films begin promptly at 5 p.m., when the doors will be closed. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early. A cash bar for beer and wine, along with free popcorn, will be available. The Fight for Water: A Farm Worker Struggle (2014) When an environmental ruling shuts the water pumps to a region of the California Central Valley, a community of valley farmers and their farm workers stage a march across the California Central Valley in order to fight for their water. The film stars George Delgado, Joe del Bosque and producer Juan Carlos Oseguera. The movie was voted the Best Documentary Feature at the International Monarch Film Festival and the Vina de Oro Fresno International Film Festival.

Muskegon Community College 2017 Founder’s Day will be held on Thursday, Oct. 19, from 6-8:30 p.m. in the Frauenthal Center Ballroom, 425 W. Western Ave. in downtown Muskegon.

This year’s celebration, which commemorates the 1926 founding of Muskegon Community College as the fourth oldest community college in the state of Michigan, will featuring an entertaining and lively  Dueling Pianos Show, as well as a Lucky Draw Auction.

Tickets are $25 per person in advance – until Oct. 13, 2017 – or $35 per person after that date. Appetizers will be served and a cash bar will be available. Proceeds will support the Food Pantry at MCC. Visit www.muskegoncc.edu/founders to register online or for more information.

The parade is scheduled for Saturday, October 21, with a 9:30am step-off time.  It’s short (3 city blocks), but performing groups who are willing to do so are invited to stay and perform at the parade’s conclusion, in their parking lot.  The stage will be used to “accept” each group’s donation of food items and/or winter wear, and they will thank and acknowledge each group individually at that time.  Non-performing organizations will have the opportunity to share information about their group, if they choose to do so.
