From the web:
(FYI:People may wonder why some custodians lived at the library. It was because they were needed to keep coal in the furnace to keep the building heated and avoid frozen pipes in the winter time. At one time Hackley Public Library had 7 custodians. They weren't all full time, but they were all available to add coal and keep the HPL boilers running properly. During open hours they also kept the library's fireplaces operating properly. None of the HPL custodians lived in HPL.)
